ZORRO is a handsome male Black German Shepherd Dog. He is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heartworm and tick disease tested negative and is micro-chipped. He s estimated to be around 3 years old and weighs around 66 pounds.

ZORRO was surrendered to our vets in Texas from a family that had found him and have been caring for him. Attempts to find his family brought no one forward and although he does have a micro-chip it was never registered. ZORRO was very thin and the family think he had been hit by a car. The vets contacted me to see if I would be able to take him into rescue. We had him fully vetted and than transported to the rescue in Sebec, Maine.

Whilst waiting for transport ZORRO stayed with one of our foster families and was great with their two GSDs and small terrier. He loved going for rides in the truck, walked ok on the leash, but did pull and clearly needs some work on that. He is very affectionate with people and just loves to be as close as he can with them. He followed his foster dad around everywhere waiting for direction.

Since ZORRO has been at the rescue he has shown signs of not being good with other dogs in larger numbers. He is fine with just one or two dogs, but any more than that and he gets more unruly. He also was not nice to my small terrier and so is now separated from the pack, which he does not like and will bark, but for his safety and that of the other dogs when I am not around he is gated in another room. I do let him out with two of my dogs and he is fine with them. I think he might just get a bit over-whelmed with a lot of dogs - so I would not suggest dog parks, or highly animal populated areas.

I am also going to recommend a home with no small animals, since he has shown a lot of interest in a negative way in my small terrier and tries to get inside the rabbit cages. I feel he does have small animal prey drive and it would be best all around if he was in a home with none.

ZORRO does chase his tail when he is on his own, this could be from being isolated and caged for long periods and can be done as something to do, or it could be a slight neurological issue that might have happened "if" he did indeed get hit by a car. He does not show any other signs of problems, he is very responsive and I believe with the right family and training he would be an awesome boy and tail chasing will soon stop. He has only done it since he has been put in the room (attached to the living room so he is still in our environment) which is gated off.

When I got ZORRO he did seem to walk a little funny and so I booked an appointment with my vet for x-rays to be sure he doesn't have any issues with his hips or lower spine. The x-rays showed his hips were in good shape, and it did show an old fracture that has caused two bones to fuse together at the base of his spine / tail. He does hold his tail a little funny and this is most likely the cause. My vet doesn't believe he is in any pain, since the injury is most likely several years old. He had good range on movement and there was no signs of any concern for him. X-rays will be emailed to the adopting family so they can share with his new vet for reference.

ZORRO does still need to gain a lot of weight, but that will come with time and a good healthy diet.

I do believe ZORRO would benefit from a family who wants a single dog, a family who understands the German Shepherd mind-set and their needs of both mental and physical exercise. A family that has the time and patience to work with him on training, allowing him to learn and understand boundaries and expectations, whilst challenging his mind and keeping him busy. An active family that can provide him with the physical exercise incorporating the mental exercise also is important.

ZORRO is a wonderful, loving, affectionate boy and all the vet staff fell in love with him. With the correct family and environment he will be an amazing addition and grow into a fantastic addition to the family.

ZORRO is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $450.

If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious boy  a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 3-7 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.

ZORRO is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. There is a local hotel in Dover-Foxcroft that is pet-friendly (approx 6 miles) and several in Bangor (approx 45 miles). There are also lots of wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend.
