AMMO was saved from Dallas Animal Services with an injured leg. He was taken directly to our orthopedic surgery where x-rays showed an old injury of a broken front right leg. Surgery was performed the next day where the bones were re-aligned and a plate screwed to keep them in place.

AMMO stayed at the vets for a week to be sure there was not any complications and the plate sets correctly as the bones start to heal.

AMMO was brought to the rescue on 30th January and he has to have 3 weeks strict crate rest with minimal exercise to allow his leg to heal. He will be going for a check-up around 21st February and hopefully Dr. Deason (orthopedic surgeon - Deason Animal Hospital) will then release him to be available for adoption. He will still have to have limited exercise and limited leash walks which will gradually increase over the next 4 weeks.

Everyone that has met AMMO, from the shelter staff, the people that helped to transport him down from Dallas to Dr. Deason himself has commented on what a great dog he is. Dr. Deason was amazed at even though he was in considerable pain when he had him for examination, he was still very sweet.

I asked for AMMO to have x-rays taken of his hips and Dr. Deason told me that he has a mild-moderate hip dysplasia on his right hip and his left him looks normal. I asked about doing an FHO and he told me that currently AMMO does not warrent FHO surgery, however, yearly x-rays will monitor any deterioration and it could be a consideration in a few years. (FHO surgery can cost around $800-$1,000). It is advised that AMMO be given joint and bone supplements for the rest of his life, which is recommended for GSDs of his age anyway.

Dr. Deason also recommended that he have his teeth cleaned, this was not able to be done during surgery as any dental work should be done several months after any other surgery due to the high bacteria in the mouth. His teeth are good for a dog his age, but would benefit from a good clean.

AMMO is a great dog, once his leg has healed he will be back to running around and playing and catching up on being able to release all that German Shepherd Dog Energy.

He has a great temperament and is an all round happy dog. He is good with other dogs, although when eating in his crate does growl if another dogs comes close, so there could be a little bit of food protection that would need to be watched. He is, however, very responsive and I don't see this being a problem with the correct guidance and training.

AMMO was neutered at the time of his leg surgery, he has his rabies and core vaccines, he is de-wormed, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. AMMO has an estimated date of birth of January 2010 and he weighs around 68-70 pounds.

AMMO is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350.

Our application can be found on our website under the APPLICATION tab, more photo's of AMMO can be found by clicking on his photo under the GSD tab.
