SIRONA came to GaDaH from another rescue very heavily pregnant. She was taken to the vets the morning after we received her and had a check up and xrays. The x-rays showed 8, possible 9 puppies and an estimated birthdate of 10-14 days.
Well, THAT night, Friday 15th December 2012 she started to give birth and had 8 beautiful pups. SIRONA for the most part was a great mum, but after around the 2-3 point, she decided that feeding her pups was not for her.
Since they have been weened off she stays close by them when she can and is still rather protective towards them, but only with other new dogs that come in.
SIRONA can be VERY vocal and no noise gets past her, if she see's anyone walking past she lets them know that she is there.
SIRONA is quite responsive and will quieten down after a while. I"m not sure if this is her personality in general, or if she is still being somewhat protective of the house and garden because her pups are still here, and now out and about.
SIRONA gets on great with the other dogs, and she does show Alpha tendancies, however, since I have a pack already established with my own dogs, they don't get to be an alpha. However, I feel out of this environment she would want to be alpha.
SIRONA is very sweet, but I don't think she is used to having an easy life, we believe this to have been at least her second litter, and she is only around 2 years old.
SIRONA needs a family that has time to teach her all about a family life, that she doesn't need to be watching for every little thing, and that she can relax, and enjoy all the love and attention for herself.
SIRONA is a "counter thief" a "bedding thief" and anything she can get into - so she still has either puppy ways, or maybe maternal collecting.
She is a great job, a pleasure to have, but does bark a lot, so again if this does continue, it would need to be a consideration to either work on it, or not have neighbours. She maybe different when not here.
One VERY STRANGE thing is SIRONA does NOT like having her photo taken. If I life up my phone and point it to her, or a camera, no matter what she is doing she will run off. I have had her in middle of feeding her pups and just get up and run - I suppose when she was giving birth she was distracted, so not sure what has happened to her in that regard.
