Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue recently took in 31 Bichon Frise, Yorkshire Terriers and Bichon/Yorkie mixes from a family that had let things go out of control. They surrendered them to GaDaH, rather than letting the state take them.
As you can imagine this is a lot of work and we are still working on individual pictures and such.
On 31st December 2019, all but 4 of the dogs were spayed / neutered, rabies, micro-chipped, we have given them their core vaccines, de-wormed them and have them on monthly preventatives.
Their ages range from around 5-6 months to around 7 years, we can only guess their age so it is important for you to meet the dogs and choose one for your lifestyle.
A few dogs are a little scared, but the rest are very friendly and now very happy dogs - they all have been given a quick bath and did great, however, they will need to have proper bath and be groomed. We did have their nails trimmed whilst they was being spayed/neutered, however, again this is something that will need to be done on a regular occasion since they were very long.
We are looking to find these sweet dogs homes soon, however, we are looking for families that are experienced with dogs that are high maintenance in the grooming side of life. They are small dogs and can be "yappy", they are used to being with a lot of other dogs and so if being left alone, they "might" get vocal, we have no way of knowing until it happens so if you live where you can't have dogs that bark/yap then one of these dogs are probably not a good fit for you.
It appears that the dogs all lived together and were allowed to breed as and when and so marking is something that they are used to doing, which is a natural thing for dogs, but obviously in the situation they have come from a lot more prevalent. It is recommended that families look into using belly-bands, or diapers for the initial transition period, which will help with house-training and also prevent marking. They have all learned to use the dog door and for the most part use the dog door to go out in the kennel runs, or the back porch, I do have pee-pads down in the area of the house they are and they use them also.
The house training / marking is something that you must think about seriously - it is very workable, however, there is no saying how long it will take so we are looking for patient and understanding families to open their hearts and homes for these very sweet souls.
They have never been on a leash or had a collar on (other than the throw away paper collars I have put on for identification) so everything will be a new experience. They are responsive and will need to be trained which is critical to all dog ownership.
Until I have time to take and upload individual pictures, we are accepting applications and then once approved families will be invited to come to the rescue and meet the dogs and take home the one they like and that the dog likes them.
All of the dogs are located at the rescue in Sebce, Maine and families must, once approved to adopt, make an appointment to come and meet them - we do not transport dogs to families. They are available for an adoption fee of $550.
Please do not think about adopting one, or two of these dogs because they are cute and came from a bad situation - dogs that need grooming can be a lot of work and be expensive with grooming appointments often needed every 8-10 weeks. Not grooming is not an issue as they do matt very easily and matting is painful and can cause infection.
I am not going to be able to answer individual questions at the moment so please research the breed, talk to your vet about potential health issues, talk to a groomer about frequency and cost and think if you have the lifestyle for a cute, but yappy, active sweet little dog.
If interested please go to the rescue website and complete and submit the adoption application - provide references that are flexible and available since not being able to reach references or playing phone tag, is the main reason families miss out on adopting the dog they want.
Once again, the dogs are located in Sebec, Maine and it is totally your choice if you wish to make a drive to hopefully adopt one of these sweet dogs.
