FERN-1 was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs have just 3 dogs to be saved. DOLL is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative, and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 17 May 2018 and at the time of rescue at the end of September 2018 weighed around 17.00 pounds. She is listed as a Dachshund Mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.

Fern is a young an energetic, happy-go-lucky confident young girl, she is great with the other dogs of all ages and sizes, living amongst dogs from 6 pound chihuahua's up to 120 pound German Shepherd Dogs. She is friendly and happy to greet people and will bark when she notices something she is unsure of. She is a social girl and loves to explore and when ready to rest she curls up with her friends in front of the pellet stove keeping toasty warm. She is always happy to see people and runs in with the other dogs, tail wagging.

She is young and active and will need a family that can give her a good active life, suitable for his size. She is a puppy so chewing, barking / whining when left alone and needing house training are things to take into consideration. I have not seen her with children, but her demeanor and personality I have no doubt that she would be great with them and a lot of fun too.

Since she is used to being around a lot of dogs, we really prefer that she be adopted to a family who either wants to adopt another puppy or dog, who already has another dog, or who can provide a lot of socialization for her with other dogs. She is going to be scared and lonely and will be missing her pack family. She is still very puppy and so expect to work with her on puppy things.

She needs an active family and one that will keep her mind stimulated and challenged. Lots of hikes and adventures, training tricks, or agility, dock diving or other fun, active, stimulating activities would be perfect for this girl. As with all rescue's she needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other.

We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so we cannot say how she would be around them. She is great with humans and children.

We do not recommend dog parks especially with him being so young for several months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.

All dogs (except dogs saved from China) are available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.

Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.

ALL Dogs are LOCATED AT THE RESCUE IN SEBEC, MAINE.  We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
