DOLL was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs have just 3 dogs to be saved. DOLL is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative, and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 26 February 2018 and at the time of rescue at the end of September 2018 weighed around 19.40 pounds. She is listed as a Shepherd / Boxer mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.
DOLL was very shy when she first arrived at the rescue, she is living up in the house with myself, my dogs and some other rescue dogs and pups. She befriended the pups and started to enjoy being able to play and wrestle whilst safe. She was extremely thin when we saved her, but has a healthy appetite and is gaining weight as she is growing.
DOLL does at times want to guard the food, however, this is most likely as a stray she had to fend for herself and keeping her food was a matter of life and death. She is learning the word "no" and does stop when told. She has not been aggressive, just asserting herself. It is doing her good living with a lot of dogs as she is learning how to behave and communicate with other dogs and also enjoying their company.
Since she is used to being around a lot of dogs, we really prefer that she be adopted to a family who either wants to adopt another puppy or dog, who already has another dog, or who can provide a lot of socialization for her with other dogs. She is going to be scared and lonely and will be missing her pack family. She is still very puppy and so expect to work with her on puppy things.
She needs an active family and one that will keep her mind stimulated and challenged. Lots of hikes and adventures, training tricks, or agility, dock diving or other fun, active, stimulating activities would be perfect for this girl.
As with all rescue's she needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other.
We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so we cannot say how she would be around them. She is great with humans and children.
We do not recommend dog parks especially with him being so young for several months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.
All dogs (except dogs saved from China) are available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
