Triton was saved from one of the shelters we work with in Texas. He is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 9 June 2016 and has an estimated weight of 13.80 pounds. He has been listed as a Chihuahua mix. We have no way of knowing the true breed, it is up to you to decide what you think his breed/s is. He arrived at the rescue in Sebec on 16th December 2017.

When Triton first arrived at the rescue he was extremely shy and scared, he would stay curled up in the corner and sit and watch. He would freeze if I went up to go and stroke him, but was never aggressive. After a few days, he started to relax a lot more and started to enjoy his petting sessions. After about a week he started wanting to explore and whilst still not at the point where he was ready to wrestle and play with the other dogs his curiosity was taking over his shyness. Over the following few weeks he has truly decompressed and come out of his shell. He will jump up on the coach for cuddles, he will go to one of the several toy baskets and choose a toy to play with, he will play with the other dogs and now more often than not instigate play. He will follow me to the kitchen when it is "treat time" and hold his own amongst the hustle and bustle with the other dogs.

Triton can be a bit growly when he has a toy, a hoof, a horn or a treat. He has never been aggressive but doesn't want other dogs coming near him whilst he is eating or playing with his toy. He is good playing with other dogs and toys, but this is more when he has a toy on his own.  He has tried to intimidate the other dogs by going up to them and staring and having a little growl whilst they have something he wants, even with the German Shepherds, but this generally falls on deaf ears and when he knows they are not going to give up what they have to him he will go on the hunt for something else to entertain himself. Again he is not aggressive, but he does like his own space when he has something. He has never bitten or attacked any other dogs and I am able to take anything away from him at any time I please with no response.

At first Triton was doing his business near the patio door, then as he started to explore he would use the pee pads I have down for a few puppies and since his confidence has grown he uses the dog door and comes and goes in and out as he pleases. I always recommend that families expect some accidents as it is a stressful transition and until dogs get settled and learn their new routine they may have a few accidents.

Although Triton is a small dog he is still young and an active lifestyle would suit him. I do not know how he is on the leash and so the adopter must be prepared for some work with training him, once he has learnt to trust and happy and settled in his new life I do believe he will become someone's shadow and enjoy being social and adventurous. So a family that  enjoys a somewhat active lifestyle would be beneficial. Someone who understand that he will need training and guidance and learns that humans are in charge so boundaries are set. He is going to enjoy an outdoors kind of family who can give him the lifestyle that he needs. Going on road trips, to new places, hikes and adventures and letting him explore the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer will be to his and your benefit.

He is going to need a family that understands the importance of basic and advanced training. We advise that families work on their own basic training so that boundaries and expectations can be set and personalities and body language learnt in the process, which will help form a much stronger bond.

​We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.

Triton will make a great family addition to an experienced family who understands that he might need time to adapt and he might be nervous and unsure initially but know that he has huge potential once allowed to decompress and feel safe and loved. He is fun, active and very loving and deserves a good family and home to call his own. 

Triton is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550.

This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

Triton is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
