PENELOPE was saved from Bossier City Animal Shelter, Louisiana. A plea had gone out to save this heart-worm positive girl as her time of life at the shelter was almost out. We agreed to take her in, transport was arranged and PENELOPE came to GaDaH on 25th April 2015.

At first PENELOPE was unsure but it didn't take her long to warm up and want to be around all the dogs.

PENELOPE is a very sweet, affectionate girl and everyone involved in her transport fell in love with her. She is gentle, she doesn't jump up, she is respsonsive and of course a love-bug.

Since settling in, PENELOPE has started to enjoy playing with toys, although she can get a bit grumpy if any of the other dogs want to share, or take her toy away. There has not been any kind of aggression, but she is confident in letting other dogs of all ages and size know that it is her toy.

PENELOPE does have a habit of chasing and holding on to her tail. It is very sad to watch as I can only imagine the horrors of complete boredom that drove her into doing that. She does it more when she isn't doing anything, or there is nothing happening. If I call to her when she is doing it, she does stop and so I do think it is a habit brought on from boredom, maybe being locked in a crate all day - something we will never know.

I am very confident it is something that she can be worked out of since she is very responsive even when doing it. So I feel with an active family that is active outside and has lots of things going on inside the house too would be more suitable as with all the activity it would give her things to focus on and thus not get bored and hopefully eventually snap out of the habit. When she does do it - she just needs re-directing to something mentally stimulating.

PENELOPE is, as I have mentioned very responsive and like all dogs could benefit from basic and advanced obedience training. More so with her issue of chasing her tail. She and her new family would benefit with the training together so they cal learn more of each others personalities and body language.

PENELOPE is young and an active family would be great, I feel a family with children of any age would be perfect for her, as long as children are taught, or know to respect her time and space and not treat her like their toy. We do not have cats in the rescue so I cannot say how she would be with them, but she shows little interest in the small terriers we have in rescue.

PENELOPE is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed and is micro-chipped. PENELOPE has an estimated date of birth of 28 July 2013 and at the time of rescue she weighed 54.60 pounds. PENELOPE did test positive for heart-worm disease, however, she had treatment on 4th/5th May 2015.

PENELOPE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350
