CHULA was saved from the streets by a family in San Antonio. They said they kept her for a month whilst they tried to find her owners, but no one responded so they asked GaDaH to take her in. Whilst talking to the lady she told me that CHULA had gotten into several fights with her pit-bull.
CHULA (named by the family) came to rescue on 21st February 2015. In the car over here she was as sweet as can be, but did show a few signs of apprehension. At the rescue in the treatment area with fence panels separating her from the other dogs she was clearly not comfortable and did not want to go near the fence. I stayed with her to reassure her and it was clear that she was bonding with me. I let two dogs into the treatment area and she became quite protective when the dogs came near me. I have spent time working with her and she has gotten much better and when she is with the dogs in the rescue area she is ok, however, if I sit down she will come and sit or stand by me and not like it if any other dogs come near me. She has not been aggressive, but I have been a strong alpha and let her know that this behaviour is unacceptable. I am sure when she has settled and realizes she is safe and fits in with the pack she will be fine, but this will most likely be her behaviour when she goes to her new family as once again she will have been uprooted and insecure, so she will need time, patience, understanding and a family willing to work with her if she gets like this.
Other than her initial protectiveness, CHULA is an absolute sweetheart, she is very responsive, very willing to please and happy to be with her human. CHULA has clearly had an up-rooted life and needs to find a family that can offer her that stability and security that humans and animals alike need.
CHULA will need an alpha personality family as she will need someone to look up to for when she is feeling insecure, plus if she is being protective she needs someone who she respects and so will listen when they tell her 'NO'. CHULA will benefit from a family that has time to take her places so that she can take in the sights and smells of the world, she is a young girl and so will need not only physical but mental exercise also.
CHULA is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested NEGATIVE and micro-chipped, at the time she came to rescue she weighed 61.40 pounds and has an estimated date of birth of 25 February 2013.
CHULA is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350.
