MILLIE - Germanic for Strength and Determination
MILLIE was saved from BARC Animal Shelter in Houston on 28 January 2014. It was clear she had been abused as she was very submissive and would stand facing the wall if she thought she was in trouble. Over the months her confidence built and she settled in with the other rescue dogs and her personality shined.
MILLIE does have separation anxiety and although not destructive she will bark or whine to get attention. MILLIE also chooses one human and gets into a protective mode and doesn't want anyone else coming in. She will bark and if allowed to escalate she will growl. This behaviour needs to be stopped and she needs to know that it is not acceptable and she has to learn to share. This was discovered when MILLIE went to stay with a friend for a few weeks. They was working with her and she had showed signs of improvement, but her stay there ended before more would could be done.
MILLIE loves being with her human, be it on walks, runs or just for rides in the car. She loves her toys and has great toy drive and she is happy to play with her toys, or whilst she was here at the rescue she would enjoy playing with the other dogs also.
MILLIE was adopted to a family that said they had plenty of GSD experience i January 2015, they knew that MILLIE had her issues. A month later we had a message saying that she could no longer stay with them as her behaviour has escalated. From what we have learned, there was no kind of training or reinforcement done when MILLIE showed this behaviour, so she didn't learn that what she was doing was wrong.
MILLIE is currently with a foster lady living in BROOKLYN, NY. MILLIE has been doing great and her foster mum is working on her separation anxiety in many productive and successful ways. Not letting MILLIE follow her everyone and she is being reprimanded when she does wrong. She is learning the command quiet - as MILLIE can be very vocal.
MILLIE needs a family that has the time and COMMITMENT to give to her. They need to understand the GSD mind and how they are naturally protective, and understand that MILLIE "claims" one person, and so the natural thing to do would be for the person she has claimed to step back and other family members take the lead with her.
MILLIE needs to be able to feel secure, and be taught that even if she can't see you that she is safe. She needs an active family that will take her places and let her brain be challenged so that she will have less time and energy to stress over the things that are causing her upset.
MILLIE as mentioned LOVES toys, she would have made an excellent working dog, if she had not have these other issues. MILLIE is good with other dogs ,and whilst at the rescue lived amongst 50 dogs of all ages and sizes and was no problem. MILLIE will play with other dogs, but she is more interested in her toys and her human.
We are really hoping that someone out along the east coast has the heart, experience and commitment to give this beauty a chance. She is stunning, fun, affectionate, loving and very happy. She is the dog that will hear your car from up the street and wait to pounce on you and shower you with kisses as you come through the door, she has so much love to give, she needs a family that give her what she needs and that really is just GSD or working breed experience, lots of ideas to give her lots of mental stimulation , an active life to give her the physical exercise and a strong alpha personality that she can respect, admire and be confident enough to trust.
We know that there are lots of people out there who fit this profile, we just need to find them.
MILLE is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm negative and micro-chipped. MILLIE has a date of birth of 22 January 2013 and weighs around 65 pounds.
She is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue. If you would are in or around the Brooklyn area and want to meet MILLIE we require our adoption application to be submitted and then we will put you in contact with her foster mum so you can discuss and arrange a time to meet her.
