CARMELO was found on the streets of Mexico by an amazing man who did so much for this sweet boy. His foster family flew with him from Mexico to Maine to transfer him to GaDaH so that we can find him his best forever family.

CARMELO is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, heartworm/tick tested negative. He is on monthly prevention, microchipped, has an estimated date of birth of 20 November 2020 and at the  time of transport weighed 31 pounds. We have no way of knowing what the actual breed is, so it is up to people to look at the pictures and video's to make up their own mind.

CARMELO's story from his finder/foster family in Mexico:

Carmelo was found 1/22/23 by me on a city street unable to bear weight in his back legs. He had been in one spot for days dragging himself to the shade as the sun moved. The neighborhood women were giving him water but he was highly vulnerable. On the second day while I was visiting him, the neighbors said they would kill him to end his suffering. I asked if I could have him and they told me he belonged to no one. I picked him up screaming and took him to an all night animal hospital. 

Notes from his amazing finder:

• Age - Both Veterinarian and trainer estimate birth date around Thanksgiving 2020.
• History-Street dog, known to the neighborhood but never in a household, rescued 1/22/23 and fostered in a home since.
• Health -In good health, recovered from tick borne illness that he had when he was rescued, neutered.
• Dog friendly and experienced in play groups. Would do best in a multi-dog house to burn off energy.
• Food -  Does not do food guarding and food can be removed without incident.
• Has been eating kibble twice a day mixed 50/50 with cooked meat, rice and veg.
• No allergies or sensitivities evident.
• New people -sometimes reserved and in need of time to adjust to the presence of a new person. He moves quickly towards acceptance, but if the person moves towards him too fast, he may growl, and show teeth. If the person doesn't back off after being warned by him, he may nip. He has never made a serious bite, but he has nipped hard without breaking skin twice.
• Children - Both his trainer and I agree he is not ready to be around children. He still puts my whole nose or hand in his mouth and lightly bites down when excited. This could be very threatening for a child. We have been training him away from mouthing what is not his, but he is not ready for children.
• Anxiety-New situations or situations where he feels threatened may require some slowing down and reassurance. He may growl if he feels threatened.
• People he knows -Generally once he accepts someone, there are no further issues.
• Guarding property-Once he knows who is supposed to be on property, he will alert if a stranger approaches. He does not attack but backs up as he alerts and the person approaches.
• Barking -Only barks if he is alerting of danger. Generally whines and cries when he wants something or is anxious.
• Activity -He is active, and requires some running around each day in order to settle down.
• Housebroken -yes.
• Crate trained -yes.
• Leashed trained -in process and responds to the "shchtttt" sound to stop when he is leash pulling. He loves walks.
• Coming when called -only if the person is holding treats or offering something he wants.
• Couch time with owner - working on not mouthing pillows, tv remote, hands, etc when sitting quietly.
• Off leash in house -Cannot be trusted yet around possessions. Should be on leash and supervised in house until he understands what is his. He is excessively mouthy and wants something in his mouth when he gets excited. He does not generally destroy cloth toys but uses them to self soothe.
• Car rides -likes them, needs to be restrained to keep him off driver's lap.
• Baths -Has been getting better and has had five.

This adoption fee covers the cost of running a brick and mortar rescue as well as any transport, veterinary, food,     treats, toys costs and the many expenses that rescues endure to keep the pets in their care safe, and happy.    Be sure to read all the information and if interested, go to the rescue website to submit an adoption application.

The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavors. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating. There have not been issues with eating any of the varying foods. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free!

​You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the "3 Point Rule" Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3-month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.

ALL Dogs are LOCATED AT THE RESCUE IN SEBEC, MAINE. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx. 8 miles) and approx. 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend.
