DUTCH came to the rescue from a State of Maine seizure case whilst he was on hold pending a court order. He was at the rescue around a month and then transferred to the rescue. He was saved from a home where he and 41 other dogs and cats were living in a single-wide trailer.

DUTCH has been estimated to be around 5-7  years old and weighs 32.5 pounds. He has had his rabies, core vaccines, blood/chem/4dx testing and is negative for heartworm disease, but tested positive for Lyme disease, we have ordered a Lyme C6 antibody count to give a baseline and a retest is recommended in 6 months to see if his levels have increased or decreased. Although he is not showing any symptoms, he is on the antibiotic, doxycycline for 30 days as a precaution, since we do not know when he was bitten by a tick. heartworm and tick disease. A copy of his blood/chemistry and 4dx will be provided so your vet has a baseline for future testing. He is on monthly preventatives and has been de-wormed.
 

A contract will need to be signed that DUTCH will be neutered at your own veterinarians earliest convenience. Payment will be arranged directly with the veterinarian and the cost of neuter will be no expense to adopters.

When DUTCH arrived he had a thick, heavy coat that was matted completely down to his skin. We spoke to Armega Grooming LLC, in Levant, Maine, who squeezed him in and did an outstanding job of shaving him down. Meg reported that considering how bad and painful his matts were, he behaved wonderfully and allowed her to shave him down with no issues at all. He looked like a different dog when I went to pick him up and his new happy, pain-free personality came beaming through and the Keeshond character of "no one being a stranger" shone through.

It is important that any wanting to adopt this handsome boy understands that his breed is HIGH MAINTENANCE in grooming, his coat will grow long and thick again and at least daily brushing is required and regular grooming to keep his coat in good condition and never allow to get matted again.
 

DUTCH is an extremely happy boy, he loves everyone he meets and has been great with other dogs. Although over-whelmed with the other dogs in the kennels when he first arrived, he quickly learnt the dog door and now plays happily in the outside dog runs with his friends here at the rescue.

DUTCH walks on the leash, although there is room for improvement, he rides great in the car and is super happy. He does spin around a lot, which could be from neglect, or just that small/medium breed thing that they do. Mental stimulation and lots of exercise will decrease that.  He can be needy and clingy, which is understandable for all that he has endured. He has been exposed to kittens and was not interested in them at all. Of course in a home, when he has settled in and cats and darting around, might change things, however, for now he has no interest at all.

He is an intelligent boy and I am sure training will be enjoyable and easy. We are looking for a family that not only has the time and patience to help this boy transition to a new home and gain confidence in his new home and enjoy all the love and cuddles he has to share, but also an active family who can work with him and ensure he gets the lifestyle that he needs to keep him happy and healthy mentally and physically. He has not shown any interest in toys, which is most likely due to never having any.

Dogs have access and use dog doors to go outside, they will not know to let you know they need to go outside, so families must expect accidents and be prepared to teach your new dog to let you know when they need to go outside.

The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavours. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating. There have not been issues with eating any of the varying foods. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free!

​You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the "3 Point Rule" Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3-month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.
