TABITHA was saved from Texas in December 2017, she was a shy fearful girl, however, living with the rescue pack, she soon learnt to trust and enjoy life and was adopted in March 2018 and was named Nova.

Unfortunately, on 18 October 2020 I received an email from the family saying that they needed to return her, she had recently started "nipping" and with having young children who have friends around and lots of running and excitement it was too much for her and she would get hyper when the children were running around.

Tabitha is spayed, she has just had her rabies vaccine, she has been tested for heartworm and tick diseases, and sadly tested positive for Lyme disease. She is not showing any symptoms, however, I instructed that she should start the month course of antibiotics to be sure anything that might be lurking is dealt with and not given a chance to do any harm. She is heartworm negative. She has a date of birth of around 4 November 2016 and I presume she weighs around 71 pounds, but can confirm when she is back at the rescue.

With her family she was fed FROMM dog food, however, when she is back at the rescue she will be fed Rachel Ray Peak, both of which are top rated foods.

Other than this recent nipping she has been a great family pet, enjoying car rides, boat rides, camping, exploring the woods, sticks, tennis-balls, snuggling and is still a big goof-ball. As with most, young, high energy dogs that can get over-stimulated if there is a lot of excitement, children running around and such and sometimes dogs forget they are playing with humans and act like the dog that they are, which means playing with their mouths.

When she first arrived back at the rescue she was very scared and confused and it took her a few days to settle back in. Since then she has become such a happy girl, she is clearly missing her family and a lifestyle of getting lots of attention, walks, adventures and such but is enjoying all the crazy times with the dogs here at the rescue. She does tend to get over stimulated when lots of dogs are playing and as soon as dog or human moves, she jumps up and is ready to go - I do think she would benefit from a home that is active, but has quite times also so that she too can relax, she seems to be constantly on the go and can't settle here at the rescue, but living with 30 dogs, there is always something for her to do.

She has been around cats and is very curious - and will follow, watch and chase them - she is extremely responsive when told no, so I have no worries about her being in the same room as the cats when I am here, however, I would not trust her to be left alone with them - I do not think she would hurt them, but as mentioned with all the extra stimulation here, I do not leave any dogs in a room with the cats when I am not around.

We are looking for an active family for her, one who understands she is going to be upset, confused and maybe traumatized for a while. She is going to need training to re-enforce what she already knows, but also so she can learn her new family, the new rules, their body-language, expectations, boundaries and such. She is a young 4 years old and still full of energy and goofiness.

​We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.

Tabitha as mentioned is full of energy and so a family with an active lifestyle is a huge bonus. She rode great in the car and when she settled down she was happy looking out of the window. She would benefit from lots of road trips and adventures, hiking, trips to the lake, the beach and anywhere that she can burn off some of her energy and enjoy the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. She will need a family that understands the importance of training and we encourage all families to work on basic and advanced training as a family so that boundaries and expectations can be set and both Tabitha and her humans can learn each others body language and personalities and form a stronger bond and understanding of each other. 

Tabitha is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350.

This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

Tabitha is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine . We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
