Mikey was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. Mikey is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 31 August 2016 and weighs around 50.00 pounds. He has been listed as a Cattle Dog / Collie We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely. It is important to note that if you believe he does look like he has pit bull terrier in him, then several places have breed restrictions and some people can have a negative attitude towards the breed.
MIKEY had finally found his forever family, but was not good with their cats and so he had to be returned to the rescue. MIKEY is NOT GOOD WITH CATS!
Mikey is the sweetest boy, he is an active boy, but is so laid back. He is located in the kennel building and he will go outside in the run to do his business and to see what is going on outside, but when it isn't play time he settles down and relaxes enjoying chewing on his hoof. When Mikey arrived at the rescue it was winter and he really enjoyed the snow, being from Texas this was the first time he had experienced snow and he seemed to find it fascinating.
Mikey is a really happy boy, he will run and play and then come back to check in before running off to explore a bit more. He is so sweet and loving, he loves to lean on you and get his head scratched or his belly rubbed. He wags his tail and goes to the gate to greet people when they go over to the kennels, he truly is just pure-sweetness.
Mikey has been great with the dogs although he does have alpha tendencies and can be a bit of a bully at times, so that is important for a potential family to be confident with and understand dogs body language and personalities. Since being here at the rescue he has not shown any signs of aggression. We do not have cats at the rescue so cannot comment how he is with cats, however, I would think most likely a home without cats would be best.
Mikey is great with adults and children, he is gentle, loving, he gets excited when it's time to play or to go for a walk or a ride in the car. He is very responsive and would be very easy and a lot of fun to train
We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.
Mikey is full of energy and so a family with an active lifestyle is a huge bonus. He rode great in the car and was happy looking out of the window. He would benefit from lots of road trips and adventures, hiking, trips to the lake, the beach and anywhere that he can burn off some of his energy and enjoy the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. He will need a family that understands the importance of training and we encourage all families to work on basic and advanced training as a family so that boundaries and expectations can be set and both Mikey and his humans can learn each others body language and personalities and form a stronger bond and understanding of each other.
Mikey is available for a REDUCED ADOPTION FEE of $200
This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
