DIXIE was saved from a shelter in Texas. She is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. She has been estimated date of birth of  16 November 2014 and weighs around 79 pounds.

DIXIE was originally adopted from the shelter in Texas a year ago with another dog who was  her best friend. Sadly for them, their family relocated to Spain and so returned them to the shelter, where DIXIE's best friend was adopted. When we got DIXIE up to the rescue in Maine, she was depressed and clearly stressed from all the trauma of losing her family and best friend. We spent time with her and as you can see in the video, she is much happier now, just waiting that her perfect forever family will find her soon.

DIXIE does have some training, however, she knows how to play people and will test to see if she can get away with things. When I call her in after play-time, she gets more playful and wants me to chase her, she knows when it is time to give up and come in, she is a very smart girl.

DIXIE was initially a little grumpy with the other dogs, but I think that was more as she was stressed, depressed and had no idea what was happening and the other dogs are young and not yet well mannered in that they was jumping on her and not respecting her pace. She has never been aggressive, but she let them know she was not happy, to which they responded and left her alone.  We do not have cats in the rescue so are unable to comment on how he would be around them.

DIXIE rides great in the car and walks nicely on the leash, she is well mannered, I have not seen her jump up, but she does jump around when she gets excited, she definitely enjoys going for a walk and knows when the leash comes out it is time for that walk.

DIXIE is a big girl weighing around 80 pounds and definitely needs an active family who can ensure she gets enough physical exercise, playing ball in the back yard once a day is not enough for this beauty she needs to go on long walks, hikes and places where she can run. DIXIE would benefit from going on road trips or to places that can offer her some adventure, allowing her to take in the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer will not only give the physical exercise she needs, but also the mental stimulation.

Although DIXIE has had some training, she would benefit from training with her new family so that both her humans and DIXIE can learn each others personality, body language, boundaries and expectations. This also helps with bonding and reinforces to DIXIE that her humans are her alpha.

DIXIE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. 

This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

DIXIE WILL BE located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. There is a local hotel in Dover-Foxcroft that is pet-friendly (approx 6 miles) and several in Bangor (approx 45 miles). There are also lots of wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
